The Muslims of British India

Hardy, Thomas Hardy. THE EFFECTS OF BRITISH RULE ON MUSLIMS
BEFORE 1857 Writing in 1871 , the Bengal civilian , W . W . Hunter ( 1840 – 1900

Shows how the interplay of memories of past Muslim supremacy, Islamic religious aspirations and modern Muslim social and economic anxieties with the political needs of the alien ruling power gradually fostered a separate Muslim politics. Argues that Muslims were able to take political initiatives because, in the region of modern Uttar Pradesh, British rule before 1857 and even the events of the Mutiny and Rebellion of 1857–8 had not been economically disastrous for most of them. Stresses the force of religion in the growth of Muslim political separatism, showing how the 'modernists' kept the conversation among Muslims within Islamic postulates and underlining the role of the traditional scholars in heightening popular religious feeling. Regarding any sense of Muslim political unity and nationhood as an outcome of the period of British rule, Dr Hardy shows the limitations and frailty of that unity and nationhood by 1947.--From publisher's description.

British Social Realism: From Documentary to Brit Grit details and explores the rich tradition of social realism in British cinema from its beginnings in the documentary movement of the 1930s to its more stylistically-eclectic and generically-hybrid contemporary forms. Samantha Lay examines the movements, moments and cycles of British social realist texts through a detailed consideration of practice, politics, form, style and content, using case studies of key texts including Listen to Britain, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, Letter to Brezhnev, and Nil By Mouth. The book considers the challenges for social realist film practice and production in Britain, now and in the future.

In this fascinating book, Mark Stein examines black British literature, centering on a body of work created by British-based writers with African, South Asian, or Caribbean cultural backgrounds. Linking black British literature to the bildungsroman genre, this study examines the transformative potential inscribed in and induced by a heterogeneous body of texts. Capitalizing on their plural cultural attachments, these texts portray and purvey the transformation of post-imperial Britain. Stein locates his wide-ranging analysis in both a historical and a literary context. He argues that a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approach is essential to understanding post-colonial culture and society. The book relates black British literature to ongoing debates about cultural diversity, and thereby offers a way of reading a highly popular but as yet relatively uncharted field of cultural production. With the collapse of its empire, with large-scale immigration from former colonies, and with ever-increasing cultural diversity, Britain underwent a fundamental makeover in the second half of the twentieth century. This volume cogently argues that black British literature is not only a commentator on and a reflector of this makeover, but that it is simultaneously an agent that is integral to the processes of cultural and social change. Conceptualizing the novel of transformation, this comprehensive study of British black literature provides a compelling analytic framework for charting these processes.

The essays presented in this collection consider a wide range of cultural, social and intellectual topics specific to British History from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century. The book attempts to show the centrality of the Empire in the history of various nations created by the British diaspora overseas. It examines numerous topics relating to British history, including the history of the old self-governing Dominions -- Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia -- and seeks to uncover the true nature of how British Imperial history has been written. Rejecting a nostalgic point of view, these essays written by leaders in the field, are cast in a critical light asking the reader to evaluate the historiographical context of British history.

The demise of the British Empire in the three decades following the Second World War is a theme that has been well traversed in studies of post-war British politics, economics and foreign relations. Yet there has been strikingly little attention to the question of how these dramatic changes in Britain's relationships with the wider world were reflected in British culture. This volume addresses this central issue, arguing that the social and cultural impact of decolonisation had as significant an effect on the imperial centre as on the colonial periphery. Far from being a matter of indifference or resigned acceptance as is often suggested, the fall of the British Empire came as a profound shock to the British national imagination, and resonated widely in British popular culture.

In this controversial reevaluation of Neville Chamberlain and appeasement, the author argues that Chamberlain believed a Second World War would be disastrous for Britain, and focused all his energies to avoid it. The book sets Chamberlain's actions within a wider chronological framework and takes a fresh look at the underlying influences on the policy of appeasement within British society.
