1ST FLAP COPY Several years ago, while I was rounding at one of the Brigham and Women's Hospital nurseries, a new father shared a funny story with me. Early the previous morning, this new father went to the hospital lobby in search of coffee and bagels. While waiting in line at the coffee shop, the father noticed a man enter the lobby. He was struck by the odd appearance of this man. In the midst of a brutally cold New England winter, this man was dressed in a bicycle racing shirt, shorts, ski socks pulled up to his knobby knees, ankle weights, a hos- pital ID badge around his neck, and a propeller att- ached to the top of his bicycle helmet. When he returned to his wife's hospital room, he told her about his experience. This new dad worked in the human services field and was very impressed that the hospital was so progressive as to hire such an obviously mentally challenged person. About ten minutes passed when the new parents heard a loud knock on the hospital room door. To their surprise, shock, astonishment and horror, the same man walked into the room-complete with the propeller helmet, shorts, ski socks, ankle weights. Now the man had a stethoscope around his neck and was pushing a portable crib with their new baby! Greeting the shocked and befuddled new parents, the man proudly announced his arrival. "Hi, I'm Dr. Heller. I'm your pediatrician and am here to exam- ine your baby." Dr. Dan was, without a doubt, the most unique, charismatic and outgoing individual who one will ever meet. As one mother remarked to me, 'You will always remember the first time you met Dr. Dan." Bruce Bunnell, MD, Dr. Heller's partner of 15 years at Centre Pediatrics, told this story at a memorial sevice for Dr. Heller in 2005. 2nd FLAP: "Having Dr. Heller for a doctor was like having Mary Poppins for a nanny." -Parent, Sara B. "Dr. Dan was an original-that's the only way I know how to put it. He is such a huge part of our family history that memories keep flooding in. For example, when our daughter finally slept through the night after months of disturbing our sleep, my husband and I were not only shocked: as new parents, we were also worried that her brand new sleep pattern might signal a serious medical problem. Dr. Dan was on when I called, and I will never forget how he questioned me closely about symp- toms and listened very carefully to all I said. Then, as I hung on to every word of diagnosis he could provide for me, he slowly explained, 'That, Mrs. L, is what we in the medical profession refer to as ...a blessing!'" -Parent, Susan L.

Perfect for expecting parents who want to provide a soothing home for the newest member of their family, The Happiest Baby on the Block, the national bestseller by respected pediatrician and child development expert Dr. Harvey Karp, is a revolutionary method for calming a crying infant and promoting healthy sleep from day one. In perhaps the most important parenting book of the decade, Dr. Harvey Karp reveals an extraordinary treasure sought by parents for centuries --an automatic “off-switch” for their baby’s crying. No wonder pediatricians across the country are praising him and thousands of Los Angeles parents, from working moms to superstars like Madonna and Pierce Brosnan, have turned to him to learn the secrets for making babies happy. Never again will parents have to stand by helpless and frazzled while their poor baby cries and cries. Dr. Karp has found there IS a remedy for colic. “I share with parents techniques known only to the most gifted baby soothers throughout history …and I explain exactly how they work.” In a innovative and thought-provoking reevaluation of early infancy, Dr. Karp blends modern science and ancient wisdom to prove that newborns are not fully ready for the world when they are born. Through his research and experience, he has developed four basic principles that are crucial for understanding babies as well as improving their sleep and soothing their senses: ·The Missing Fourth Trimester: as odd as it may sound, one of the main reasons babies cry is because they are born three months too soon. ·The Calming Reflex: the automatic reset switch to stop crying of any baby in the first few months of life. ·The 5 “S’s”: the simple steps (swaddling, side/stomach position, shushing, swinging and sucking) that trigger the calming reflex. For centuries, parents have tried these methods only to fail because, as with a knee reflex, the calming reflex only works when it is triggered in precisely the right way. Unlike other books that merely list these techniques Dr. Karp teaches parents exactly how to do them, to guide cranky infants to calm and easy babies to serenity in minutes…and help them sleep longer too. ·The Cuddle Cure: the perfect mix the 5 “S’s” that can soothe even the most colicky of infants. In the book, Dr. Karp also explains: What is colic? Why do most babies get much more upset in the evening? How can a parent calm a baby--in mere minutes? Can babies be spoiled? When should a parent of a crying baby call the doctor? How can a parent get their baby to sleep a few hours longer? Even the most loving moms and dads sometimes feel pushed to the breaking point by their infant’s persistent cries. Coming to the rescue, however, Dr. Karp places in the hands of parents, grandparents, and all childcare givers the tools they need to be able to calm their babies almost as easily as…turning off a light. Thousands of years before this story begins, in a world rife with war, savagery and power, a prophesy was made, one amongst many of that time. Then it was forgotten, but prophesies have a tendency to be forgotten, do they not? Yet, prophesies have a better chance of being realised when forgotten than when the two legs try to favour it or to mingle with its natural development. This scroll tells the story of how our family became involved with its onset, development, and conclusion. This is my saga. I almost started this scroll with the classical once upon a time, but this story is on-going, and you too will be part of it, writing your own saga in time. Sons, Daughters, learn that the past may guide, but must never stifle your thinking. Nothing we hold dear is permanent, and this is right, for permanence equals stability, leading to disappearance. Let us begin our trip... Uncle Silver Wolf Nearly eight thousand years after the Nuclear Cataclysm threw back civilization to the cave age, society is fighting its way up the ladder again. The political structure matches the Middle Age, with Kingdoms, Trade Orders, Roads of Initiation, and Symbols of Mastery. There exists one huge historical difference: Each six-year old Child is taken from home by the Diviners, travels for a year to get hands-on work experience before being incorporated into an Order for life. Another issue is the effects of the Cataclysm on life: numerous mutant life-forms have emerged, while huge swaths of the world have become inhospitable. Thus begins the story of Harold, Companion Ironsmith, and how he discovers his unexpected heritage.

The people of the Ninth Cave of the Zelandonii fascinate Ayla. Their clothes, customs, artifacts, even their homes—formed in great cliffs of vertical limestone—are a source of wonder to her. And in the woman Zelandoni, the spiritual leader of the Ninth Cave (and the one who initiated Jondalar into the Gift of Pleasure), she meets a fellow healer with whom to share her knowledge and skills. But as Ayla and Jondalar prepare for the formal mating at the Summer Meeting, there are difficulties. Not all the Zelandonii are welcoming. Some fear Ayla’s unfamiliar ways and abhor her relationship with those they call flatheads and she calls Clan. Some even oppose her mating with Jondalar, and make their displeasure known. Ayla has to call on all her skills, intelligence, knowledge, and instincts to find her way in this complicated society, to prepare for the birth of her child, and to decide whether she will accept new challenges and play a significant role in the destiny of the Zelandonii. Jean Auel is at her very best in this superbly textured creation of a prehistoric society. The Shelters of Stone is a sweeping story of love and danger, with all the wonderful detail—based on meticulous research— that makes her novels unique. It is a triumphant continuation of the Earth’s Children® saga that began with The Clan of the Cave Bear. And it includes an amazing rhythmic poem that describes the birth of Earth’s Children and plays its own role in the narrative of The Shelters of Stone.
