Exactly solvable models, that is, models with explicitly and completely diagonalizable Hamiltonians are too few in number and insufficiently diverse to meet the requirements of modern quantum physics. Quasi-exactly solvable (QES) models (whose Hamiltonians admit an explicit diagonalization only for some limited segments of the spectrum) provide a practical way forward. Although QES models are a recent discovery, the results are already numerous. Collecting the results of QES models in a unified and accessible form, Quasi-Exactly Solvable Models in Quantum Mechanics provides an invaluable resource for physicists using quantum mechanics and applied mathematicians dealing with linear differential equations. By generalizing from one-dimensional QES models, the expert author constructs the general theory of QES problems in quantum mechanics. He describes the connections between QES models and completely integrable theories of magnetic chains, determines the spectra of QES Schrödinger equations using the Bethe-Iansatz solution of the Gaudin model, discusses hidden symmetry properties of QES Hamiltonians, and explains various Lie algebraic and analytic approaches to the problem of quasi-exact solubility in quantum mechanics. Because the applications of QES models are very wide, such as, for investigating non-perturbative phenomena or as a good approximation to exactly non-solvable problems, researchers in quantum mechanics-related fields cannot afford to be unaware of the possibilities of QES models.

Get out of your own way and bring your ideas to life! Exactly Where to Start is a playbook for everyone with a great idea, everyone with a goal in mind, and everyone with a specific destination but no journey. We’ve been told all our lives that “good things come to those who wait”—but that’s a myth. Good things come to those who do. Too often, we get stuck in the “getting ready” stage: research, analysis, brainstorming, and more research; we feel like we need to know everything there is to know about what we want to do before we ever take the first steps. Meanwhile, the people who actually go out and do the thing are taking risks, learning lessons, and making strides toward their goals every single day. Isn’t it time you joined them? This book coaches you through the journey with precise, actionable steps that help you take that all-important first leap and keep the momentum going. Discard the distractions, break through the overwhelm, and get going for real with this real-world blueprint for turning your vision into reality. Snap yourself out of “analysis paralysis” Stop thinking you need to know everything before you even begin Make those big decisions and focus in on your goals Chart your journey’s path, and get up and get started today Many of us have fallen into a trap: we no longer believe that “anything is possible”, yet we are surrounded by proof that everything is possible! But we are distracted, harried, overwhelmed, and maybe a little intimidated. Our dreams remain forever in limbo, and we may go to our graves before we venture beyond the “planning stage”. Don’t let that happen—don’t you deserve to realize your goals? Exactly Where to Start gives you the kick in the pants and the practical plan you need to stand up, step up, and make it happen.

Here together for the first time in one volume are the twenty five spooky stories created by Sir Andrew Caldecott in two collections the 1940s: Not Exactly Ghosts and Fires Burn Blue.Caldecott, who only turned to fiction after retiring from the civil service, allowed his lifelong fascination with the supernatural full reign in these simple yet remarkably disturbing stories. Taking his inspiration from the master of the ghost story, M. R. James, who chilled by implication rather than by gory description, Caldecott created believable but unsettling scenarios which effectively produce a sense of unease in the reader. The mundane becomes horrific; the everyday is unnerving; and the commonplace is frightening. At last these rare forgotten gems are available once more to stir the imagination and chill the blood.

This first collection of poemsunveils the magician's trick: an illusion only works if we believe that whatwe've just seen is exactly what happened. With a hairsplitting sense of detailand spellbinding language, Joel Brouwer's poems consider characters and eventsboth real and imagined, seeking to expose the deceptions we live with daily.Belief is at stake in every poem. A boy discovers his mail-order magic kit isfake. Astronomers find water in a distant galaxy and wonder if life might existthere. A photojournalist manipulates his pictures to maximize their drama.Harry Houdini explains that his illusions came not from magic but labor, from ?thesefingers, cut callused stalks.? In these and many other poems, Exactly What Happened reflects on theincidents and accidents that make up the enchanting, painful, and quirky worldin which we live in. Written with the scrutiny of a reporter and a conjurer?ssympathy for mystery, Brouwer?s poems help us find the dignity in belief?sdeceit.

Why are parking lots the most dangerous places in America? What are the hardest packages to open? Do inanimate objects have a life? Can they talk to one another? What is the real purpose of those high walls along the interstate? These, and other daunting questions of our time will be answered definitively in this lively and witty collection of essays and stories. Along the way, we will travel alongside a band of latter-day civil disobedients as they strive for a strange justice, and empathize with a struggling artist as he seeks an unconventional pathway toward recognition. In another tale, a chance encounter on a snowy night in west Texas reveals what really went down the day the music died. The author also revisits simpler times, recalling a quiz show jackpot gone awry, a cherished world series played long ago, and the remembrance of cars past. More fanciful diversions include the writers presentation on his own Presidential campaign, a piece on why everyone is badly attired in a land of plenty, and the ongoing challenges everyman faces today in coping with advancing technology. A true Renaissance-Man writer, Typermass visits a wide array of subject matter in a book that captures one mans take on popular culture.

Not everything is black and white. Our daily lives are full of vagueness or fuzziness. Language is the most obvious example - for instance, when we describe someone as tall, it is as though there is a particular height beyond which a person can be considered 'tall'. Likewise the terms 'blond' or 'overweight' in common usage. We often think in discontinuous categories when we are considering something continuous. In this book, van Deemter cuts across various disciplines in considering the nature and importance of vagueness. He looks at the principles of measurement, and how we choose categories; the vagueness lurking behind what seems at first sight crisp concepts such as that of the biological 'species'; uncertainties in grammar and the impact of vagueness on the programmes of Chomsky and Montague; vagueness and mathematical logic; computers, vague descriptions, and Natural Language Generation in AI (a new class of programs will allow computers to handle descriptions such as 'the man in the yellow shirt'). Van Deemter shows why vagueness is in various circumstances both unavoidable and useful, and how we are increasingly able to handle fuzziness in mathematical logic and computer science.

This invaluable book provides a broad introduction to the fascinating and beautiful subject of many-body quantum systems that can be solved exactly. The subject began with Bethe's famous solution of the one-dimensional Heisenberg magnet more than 70 years ago, soon after the invention of quantum mechanics. Since then, the diversity and scope of such systems have been steadily growing. Beautiful Models is self-contained and unified in presentation. It may be used as an advanced textbook by graduate students and even ambitious undergraduates in physics. It is also suitable for the non-experts in physics who wish to have an overview of some of the classic and fundamental models in the subject. The explanations in the book are detailed enough to capture the interest of the curious reader, and complete enough to provide the necessary background material needed to go further into the subject and explore the research literature.

Systems of strongly correlated electrons are at the heart of recent developments in condensed matter theory. They have applications to phenomena like high-c superconductivity and the fractional quantum hall effect. Analytical solutions to such models, though mainly limited to one spatial dimension, provide a complete and unambiguous picture of the dynamics involved. This volume is devoted to such solutions obtained using the Bethe Ansatz, and concentrates on the most important of such models, the Hubbard model. The reprints are complemented by reviews at the start of each chapter and an extensive bibliography.

Further research concludes that God has absolutely communicated with us. Gods revelation is investigated, using the authors analytical skills from his business background. He gets to the bottom line of many life-impacting issues. Gods revelation with man is compared with actual recorded history, and what is found may change your ideas forever. Answers to real issues are covered in a matter-of-fact manner. There is no religious upbringing to protect. Nothing is taboo. It is a search for truth that became dangerous. Previously accepted concepts and values were turned upside down. The author was unprepared for the number of partial truths and blatant lies being fed to the masses; lies that he had completely accepted as well. This is not a standard theology book. You may not agree, but you will discover the truth about God. It may be one of the most important books you read.

Much of our current knowledge on biological invasion was derived from field studies, but many recent advances relied heavily on mathematics and computing, particularly mathematical modeling. While numerical simulations are clearly a useful approach, they have some serious drawbacks. Approximations errors and the number of parameter values can have a significant impact on the simulation results, the extent of which often remains obscure. Such difficulties do not arise, however, when the problem can be solved analytically. Exactly Solvable Models of Biological Invasion demonstrates the advantages and methods of obtaining exact solutions of partial differential equations that describe nonlinear problems encountered in the study of invasive species spread. With emphasis on PDEs of diffusion-reaction type, the authors present a comprehensive collection of exactly solvable models and a unified, self-contained description of the relevant mathematical methods. In doing so, they also provide new insight into important issues such as the impact of the Allee effect, the impact of predation, and the interplay between different modes of species dispersal. Full calculation details make this presentation accessible to biologists as well as applied mathematicians, and a range of ecological examples and applications demonstrate the utility of exact methods in practice. Exact solutions provide an immediate, complete description of system dynamics for a wide class of initial conditions and serve as a convenient tool for testing numerical algorithms and codes used in more specialized studies. This book lays the groundwork for bringing the power of exactly solvable models to bear on real-world ecological problems.

Olivia McCannon's first collection explores life on the edge of possibility: in one moment the familiar is blown open, we plunge into the unknown. A chance meeting seals a lifetime; a girl leaps from a window, away from safety - she wanted to see what can happen'. From families improvising a living space in Cairo's City of the Dead, to a veteran of the Normandy landings coming home to the peaceful reparation of glueing, welding, soldering', life is luminous, and resolutely seized. The closing sequence follows the last months of the poet's mother's life. A journey into grief and loss, it pays tribute to the courage of refusing false comfort, the strength that in the end enables us to live between the lines / of tombs'.
