Sandra Merriweather at the age of nine years old had an obvious passion for writing gospel poetry and songs with an additional desire to write jingles for commercials. She was blessed with many different talents and was very successful in school, college and graduate school. She is a wife, a mother, and a grandmother to one beautiful granddaughter, however, her marriage to Michael Merriweather, former linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, Jets and Packers took her down a path of unbelievable adventures across the country and across the nation. Unknowingly and surprisingly did she realize that she would be a mentor, advocate and educator for many people throughout her career as a medical professional and Registered Nurse. Her journey has been fascinating and exciting even through adversity and obstacles but her strength and desire to make a positive contribution to society has been great! She reflects often on the words of her beautiful belated mother, Evangelist Irene Williams, "Hang in There!" Sandra also remembers the teachings and principles of her father, Pastor E.G. Williams and the constant faith and dedication exhibited by him. Within this research design book, it was Sandra's goal to try and reach out to as many persons possible involved in the care of the young athlete in a timely matter to support safety and education. This study was designed to look at the areas of concussions and head injuries from a different angle and to shed light in the areas of needed improvement because everyone should remain current with up-to-date facts; education is the key to success and prevention. It was also a goal of Mrs. Merriweather to dedicate this unique project to our former and present athletes for sports fans to remember their dedication, contributions, and support to our children as we say, "Thank You!" The violent game of football might seem an unlikely context to illustrate the grace of God. However, In Love and Football: Looking for God in a Violent Game a single season of high school football and the experiences of the players who share it are used to illustrate the many facets of an omniscient and always loving God. In Love and Football, Ed Pierce, a high school football coach and former college professor, challenges a number of the prevailing ideas about Christianity while maintaining a gospel-centered and academic approach to tenets of the faith. The author's presentation of an approach to Christianity (which has at its center a focus on Christ's message of grace as opposed to fundamentalist notions) is integrated into an entertaining and humorous account of a season of football as told through the lives of the adolescent players and the colorful men who coach them.

Grant Farred is a lifelong soccer fan. He has been rooting for one team -- Liverpool (England) Football Club -- since he was a child. Long Distance Love explains how "football" opened up the world to a young boy growing up disenfranchised in apartheid South Africa. For Farred, being a soccer fan enabled him to establish connections with events and people throughout history and from around the globe: from the Spanish Civil War to the atrocities of the Argentine dictatorship of the 1970s and '80s, and from the experience of racism under apartheid to the experience of watching his beloved Liverpool team play on English soil. Farred shows that issues like race, politics, and war are critical to understanding a sport, especially soccer. And he writes beautifully, with candor and lyricism. Long Distance Love does for soccer what C.L.R. James's Beyond a Boundary did for cricket: it provides poetry and politics in equal measure, along with insights on every page.

Gary Gerson led an uneventful life growing up Jewish in East Tennessee. This changed when he decided to walk onto the Vanderbilt football team with no prior experience, beginning a lifelong love for the game with four years of exhilaration and heartbreak. After juggling the challenges of infatuation, a bowl game, a major steroid scandal and ultimate dishonor at Vandy, Gerson's journeys brought him close to danger in Africa and India, a brush with the Yeti in the Himalaya, and more football in Amsterdam. When he fell in love with Shelley while teaching at the prestigious Cranbrook Kingswood School in Michigan, his journey for meaning took a sharp turn as she revealed her painful secret. Using his wife's triumphs and challenges as motivation, Gerson stepped back onto the football field at the age of 31 in Canada, scoring points along the way to his final personal victory. This book contains frank discussions about sex, relationships, love, AIDS, and death, but it is appropriate for all ages.

Triumphant wins, gut-wrenching losses, last-second shots, underdogs, competition, and loyalty—it’s fun to be a fan. But when a football player takes a hit to the head after yet another study has warned of the dangers of CTE, or when a team whose mascot was born in an era of racism and bigotry takes the field, or when a relief pitcher accused of domestic violence saves the game, how is one to cheer? Welcome to the club for sports fans who care too much. In Loving Sports When They Don’t Love You Back, acclaimed sports writers Jessica Luther and Kavitha A. Davidson tackle the most pressing issues in sports, why they matter, and how we can do better. For the authors, “sticking to sports” is not an option—not when our taxes are paying for the stadiums, and college athletes aren’t getting paid at all. But simply quitting a favorite team won’t change corrupt and deplorable practices, and the root causes of many of these problems are endemic in our wider society. An essential read for modern fans, Loving Sports When They Don’t Love You Back challenges the status quo and explores how we might begin to reconcile our conscience with our fandom.

Football is the greatest game in the world. Place can not be found in the world where it is not played. As Eusebio wisely said: ”Anyone can play whether you are poor or rich. All you need is space and a ball”. Football players and coaches are known from colorful language. Most of the quotes in this book are hilarious. Like Zlatan: "Now I'm here, I think the people in Paris will have something else to see besides the Mona Lisa” Many of the quotes are very inspiring as well. Messi gives us a good example: ”Talent and elegance mean nothing without rigor and precision” Let ́s enjoy players and coaches brightest moments.

Brazil has done much to shape football/soccer, but how has soccer shaped Brazil? Despite the political and social importance of the beautiful game to the country, the subject has hitherto received little attention. This book presents groundbreaking work by historians and researchers from Brazil, the United States, Britain and France, who examine the political significance, in the broadest sense, of the sport in which Brazil has long been a world leader. The authors consider questions such as the relationship between soccer, the workplace and working class culture; the formation of Brazilian national identity; race relations; political and social movements; and the impact of the sport on social mobility. Contributions to the book range in time from the late nineteenth century, when the British first introduced the sport to Brazil, to the present day, as the 'country of soccer' prepares itself to host the 2014 World Cup, painting a vivid picture of the many ways in which soccer exists and functions in Brazil, both on and off the pitch.

Love Zac

For parents struggling to decide whether to allow their kids to play football, this eye-opening, heart-wrenching, and ultimately inspiring story may be one of the most important books they will read.

"What an accomplishment. Brimming with compassion and insight, Reid Forgrave has written an artful and intimate portrait of a former high school football star that travels ambitiously into themes of masculinity, suffering, and the nature of a national obsession. Love, Zac is not just a vital contribution to the national conversation about traumatic brain injury in athletes, it’s so beautifully written it belongs on the shelf alongside classic works of literary journalism.” —Jeanne Marie Laskas, New York Times bestselling author of Concussion “A monumental achievement of deep reporting and expert storytelling.” —Michael Sokolove, author of The Last Temptation of Rick Pitino Zac Easter could be your neighbor, your classmate, your son. In December 2015, Zac Easter, a twenty-four-year-old from small-town Iowa, decided to take his own life rather than continue his losing battle against the traumatic brain injuries he had sustained as a no-holds-barred high school football player. For this deeply reported and powerfully moving true story, award-winning writer Reid Forgrave was given access to Zac’s own diaries and was able to speak with Zac’s family, friends, and coaches. He explores Zac’s tight-knit, football-obsessed Midwestern community; he interviews leading brain scientists, psychologists, and sports historians; and he takes a deep dive into the triumphs and sins of the sports entertainment industry. Forgrave shows us how football mirrors America, from the fighting spirit the game has helped inscribe in our national character to the side effects of the traditional notions of manhood that it affirms. But above all, Love, Zac is a warning to parents and those entrusted with the care of our kids not to ignore concussions and warning signs of CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). For parents struggling to decide whether to allow their kids to play football, this eye-opening, heart-wrenching, and ultimately inspiring story may be one of the most important books they will read.
