This is a revised edition of the textbook GENKI: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese, which was published in 1999. Since it first came out, GENKI has become widely used by teachers and students of Japanese and has gone through numerous reprintings. Such wide acceptance led to the decision to publish this revised edition. In 1999, our aim was to đevelop a textbook that teachers would find convenient and helpful, and one that students could easily use. We thus wrote the book based on a survey of students` needs and refined it through many test-teaching situations. Originally meant as a text for foreign students studying in Japan, GENKI gained popularity among those studying in other countries as well. As use increased, we began to hear from those who wanted "more information on culture" and "audio aids appended to the text" Its also been more than ten years since GENKI was originally published, and the passage of time has required revisions to vocabulary and expressions. While retaining the ease-of-use quality for teachers, we have added new content and revisions that reflect our experiences and the voices of those who have used the text. The task of revision took two years to complete. We believe that this effort has resulted in a book that instructors and students will fnd even easier to use and learn from. The opinions of the teachers and students who have used GENKI have been a major driving force in the preparation of this revised edition. We are truly grateful to those who have provided this input. The authors would also like to express their sincere appreciation to the following: Noriko Udagawa, our illustrator, whose work has become a GENKI trademark; the staff of The Japan Times; and particularly to Chiaki Sekido of the Publications Department of The Japan Times, who has worked tirelessy with us on this project since its inception. It is our hope that students of the language will nd additional pleasure in learning Japanese by using this new edition of GENKI.

Rethinking Language and Culture in Japanese Education

How does language or culture come to be standardized to the degree that it is considered 'homogeneous'? How does teaching language relate to such standardization processes? How can teaching be mindful of the standardization processes that potentially involve power relations? Focusing on the case of Japanese, which is often viewed as homogenous in terms of language and culture, this volume explores these questions in a wide range of contexts: the notions of translation and modernity, the ideologies of the standardization of regional dialects in Japan, current practices in college Japanese-as-a- Foreign-Language classrooms in the United States, discourses in journals of Japanese language education, and classroom practices in nursery and primary schools in Japan. This volume’s investigation of standardization processes of Japanese language and culture addresses the intersections of theoretical and practical concerns of researchers and educators that are often overlooked.

Cognitive Linguistics and Japanese Pedagogy

Typically, textbooks merely introduce the notions of action verbs (i.e., activity) and
change-of-state verbs (i.e., achievement) and list example sentences. With the
exception of one textbook, Genki, verb classification is not presented explicitly.

Learning Hiragana and Katakana is a systematic and comprehensive Japanese workbook that is perfect for self-study or in a classroom setting. Written Japanese combines three different types of characters: the Chinese characters known as kanji, and two Japanese sets of phonetic letters, hiragana and katakana, known collectively as kana, that must be mastered before the Japanese kanji can be learned. Learning Japanese Hiragana and Katakana provides beginning-level students of Japanese a thorough grounding in the basic hiragana and katakana phonetic symbols or syllabaries. A comprehensive introduction presents their primary function, origin, pronunciation and usage. The main body of the book is devoted to presenting the 92 hira and kata characters along with their variations, giving step-by-step guidelines on how to write each character neatly in the correct stroke order, with generous practice spaces provided for handwriting practice. This Japanese workbook includes: Systematic and comprehensive coverage of the two Japanese kana systems. Ample provision for Japanese kana practice, review, and self-testing at several levels Detailed reference section explaining the origin and function of kana, and the various kana combinations. Access to online Japanese audio files to aid in correct pronunciation. Helpful additional information for language students accustomed to romanized Japanese. Vocabulary selected for usefulness and cultural relevance. About this new edition: The new third edition has been expanded and revised to include many additional reading and writing exercises.
