For Gertie's New Fashion Sketchbook, Gretchen Hirsch teamed up with illustrator Sun Young Park to reinvent traditional figure templates--known as croquis--for the 21st century. Instead of the unnaturally skinny, tall, and frequently off-balance croquis the fashion industry has been sketching on for decades, this game-changing alternative presents hundreds of realistically sized and proportioned female forms in balanced, lifelike poses. In addition, Park has rendered the croquis with multiple tracing lines, allowing the sketcher to follow the lines that most accurately reflect the body shape desired. Also included are an overview of the design and sketching process and a visual history of garment component styles, all to make it easier to create fashion sketches for women of all shapes and sizes. A body-positive sketchpad to help you achieve your fashion design dreams. Loaded with more than 300 figure templates that are proportionally true to the female form and adaptable to different body types, plus helpful sketching tips and resources. A breakthrough for aspiring and experienced designers tired of the industry standard of sketching clothing on female figures that are unnaturally skinny and tall (and sometimes even off-balance). Printed in a special ink that fades away when you photocopy it.

Originally published in 1969, this is a timeless introduction to the pleasures of sewing. “Overall, this book was nicely put together and included an introduction to sewing which was perfect for young girls and boys . . . Sewing techniques are sometimes overlooked in the design process but acquiring these skills can be transformational. The ability to turn a two-dimensional design into its three-dimensional realization comes from having mastered basic sewing techniques. Sewing Techniques simplifies the often complex techniques that lie behind this process by arming designers with the precise information and skills needed to undertake each task. Designers who develop a basic understanding of the processes involved in sample and garment construction often produce successful outcomes based on a more experimental and creative approach applied during the product development process. Developing a sample folio and being able to refer to samples and develop them according to each individual design project is a process that requires experimentation and creative thought underpinned by a basic understanding of sewing techniques. This book explores the essential equipment needed - from fabric types to diagrams identifying component parts of a sewing machine, to machine operation. Throughout each process, clear diagrams accompanied by explanatory description panels allow readers to achieve the best possible results, including how to troubleshoot problems that may be encountered before and during sewing. Each section concludes with a project, progressing from easy to challenging. Fabrics for each project give designers the opportunity to handle different fabric types and understand the complexities of sourcing and selecting. Mastering the basic principles covered in Sewing Techniques will enable both fashion students and the contemporary craftworker to develop their techniques with a view to becoming creative practice-based professionals.

Divorce-a horrid seven letter word in 1914.... Gertie MacGregor, became the first and only divorced woman in Laurel, Maryland. At seventeen and in love with Edward Neal, her world was roses and sunshine. She hoped Edward would see the world as she did, but after three years, her blinders were removed. Edward's deep seeded anger ruled him. He shattered her arm and the marriage. Society expected her to make the best of it and keep the marriage vows. She chose divorce. Rejection-Words of condemnation rolled off tongues at Gertie like hot bullets when she was removed as soloist of the church choir. Gazes were averted as she met friends and neighbors. She was denied help in a time of need, and lost her job when she stayed home to care for her sick child. Her chosen path was not accepted in small town America in the early 1900's. She was ostracized and the pitfalls were many as she struggled to raise her son alone. Gertie filled her life by serving veterans at nearby Ft. Meade, through WWI and WWII. She developed USO clubs and sat at the bedsides of wounded heroes. WWII changed women's place in the world. They became part of the work force and raised children alone. Eleanor Roosevelt officially recognized Gertie's service. She was redeemed her in the eyes of her community. Jesse Morgan partnered her in service to veterans and brought love back into her life. The beautiful winding staircase in Jesse's home was symbolic of her small steps to some distant height. They walked in perfect accord up the stairs to their future. Courage-Gertie walked through life, poignantly meeting the fears and hardships of war, the devastation of loss and hatred, and the joys and sorrows of love with the grace of heroes.
