"At its core was a suspicion of emotional attachments between men and women. Boys were taken under their father's wing from a young age and taught the virtues of reason, responsibility, and maturity. Intimate bonds with mothers were discouraged, as were individual expression, pride, and play. The mature man who moderated his passions and contributed to his family and community was admired, in sharp contrast to the young, adventurous, and aggressive hero who would emerge after the American Revolution and embody our modern image of masculinity."--BOOK JACKET.

In 2001, author Susan Strong published her first book, The Greatness of Girls. Since that time, she has given extensive readings across the country. More often than not, audiences have asked the same question, "When are you going to do a book like this for boys?" In The Boldness of Boys, Strong takes the same winning approach to encouraging and empowering young people — that is, she solicits essays and anecdotes from famous men who share their own personal insights about growing up. The list of contributors is varied and impressive — all are trailblazers who have won success on their own terms. Among the 40 men included are Colin Powell, Jay Leno, Tony Hawk (skateboard champion), Ansel Adams, Christopher Reeve, Paul Orfalea (founder of Kinko"s), Lance Armstrong, Dave Barry, Nelson Mandela, and Senator John McCain. Chapters focus on relevant issues such as school, parents, adversity, challenges, mentors, and perseverance. Each entry includes a brief biography and is followed by a one- to two-page first-person essay. While the stories cover a broad range, the underlying message is the same: We all face challenges in life, but with persistence and courage, we can achieve our greatest dreams.

Coming of age memoir about growing up in Ireland in the late 60's/early 70's. From the age of 9, the author was made smuggle food supplies from the North of Ireland into the South, in order to increase profits from his father's restaurant business. From there we are introduced to his Grandfather, a lovable rogue whose self-entertainment pranks know no bounds. Growing up in an impoverished family and era, the author was fairly much forced to cut his childhood short and assume a man's role on the family farm when his father was diagnosed as suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. His father's disease does nothing to halt his penchant for coming up with completely unconventional methods of making a living, or places in which to live (a double-decker bus on the side of a Donegal mountain.) The reader is taken on a whirlwind adventure of life in Ireland without electricity or running water, where school clothes came out of brown parcels from an aunt in America and pets remained part of the family until it was time for them to be eaten.

Explores the experience of one young man and the concerns about CTE he helped to illuminate, and the cultural allure of football in America that keeps boys trying to make the team despite the dangers Award-winning journalist Vicki Mayk raises a critical question for football players and their communities: does loving a sport justify risking your life? This is the insightful and deeply human story of Owen Thomas--a star football player at Penn, who took his own life when he was 21, the result of the pain and anguish caused by chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). It was Owen's landmark case which demonstrated that a player didn't need years of head bashing in the NFL, or even multiple sustained brain concussions, to cause the mind-altering, life-threatening, degenerative disease known as CTE. And Owen's case could not have come to light without Dr. Ann McKee, the neuropathologist who bucked conventional wisdom, and the football establishment, as she examined Owen's brain and its larger significance, building an ever-stronger case that said, at the very least, football should not be played by children under the age of 14. With its focus on a single life and the community touched by it--Owen's family, his teammates and friends, his teachers and coaches, and, later, Dr. McKee--Growing Up on the Gridiron explores the place of football in our lives. It doesn't make a heavy-handed argument to abandon the sport. Rather, it explores why football matters so deeply to many young men, and why they continue to take risks despite the evidence of serious, long-term harm.

Milbank and Mitchell, dissimilar in size and separated by more than two hundred miles, have more in common than might appear at first glance. Elsewhere in the country, they would be considered small towns, but in South Dakota, they are urban population centers. In the first half of the twentieth century, when many more South Dakotans lived on farms and ranches than do today, towns such as Milbank and Mitchell formed hubs for commerce, social activities, and culture. Eric Fowler and Sheila Delaney looked at their communities from different viewpoints, but their childhood and young adult memories of South Dakota share common themes of life away from the farm. Fowler dealt with the hardships of a low-income, single-parent family in Milbank. Delaney experienced the wealth and occasional grandeur of Mitchell's social elite. Both found respite and youthful joy in mid-century South Dakota urban life. Despite the differences in Fowler and Delaney's circumstances, these two contrasting memoirs bring forth commonalities in the authors' early experiences of small-town life, even while they followed differing paths to adulthood.
