As the second main source of the true religion of Islam, hadith has a history full of ups and downs as far as the manner of its transmittal and the periods of its compilation and publication are concerned. Those who are acquainted with Islamic history have all acknowledged that from the time of transmittal up to now, hadith as been associated with many desirable as well as undesirable events, and its compilation and publication in some periods have had both faithful advocates and stern adversaries. For this reason, learning the “history of hadith” – though a piece of knowledge outside the different branches of the science of hadith – is essential for all those who want to benefit from the Sunnah and the corpus of hadith especially in view of the fact that the beginning of hadith compilation and its mechanism have not been the same for the proponents of the various Islamic schools of thought, each of them having a different opinion whose outcome may adversely affect the credibility and status of the existing traditions (ahadith). The present book, which has been written as a textbook in the tertiary level of Islamic studies, endeavors to present the general subjects relevant to hadith and its history as well as to acquaint the students of this field with the Sunni hadith collections and the Four Books (Kutub al-Arba‘ah) of the Shi‘ah in a simple and easy-to-understand approach.

The Hadith are believed to be the words of the Prophet, memorised by his followers and written down in the first or second centuries AD. This is a clear introduction to the arguments surrounding both the Hadith and the documents themselves. Comparing the views put forward in the Hadith with those of the Qur'an, it takes the student through all aspects of the Hadith in clear and accessible terms.

The book before you is taken from a larger forthcoming publication on the science of hadith, and was initially used for a short course held in the blessed month of Ramadan 2015. Due to the interest expressed by a number of students and teachers it was thought beneficial to release this early draft which can be utilised in a classroom setting. This work consists of an abridged translation of Shaykh Hasan al-Mashat's commentary on the Bayqu ̄niyyah poem, interspersed with diagrams created by the translator to facilitate understanding of the concepts covered in the text. In addition, further reading is provided in the appendices which students may find beneficial. An online translation of the Bayquniyyah poem has been used in this edition with some minor alterations, the name of the translator not being known (May God reward them abundantly for their effort). As for the Arabic edition of the Bayquniyyah poem reproduced here, the version edited by Khalid al-Suwaifi based on two manuscripts and some printed editions was used.

Since the past century, orientalist works had challenged the authenticity of Hadith material (sayings of the Prophet), claiming that these collections of hadiths were done orally and therefore subject to misreporting and alterations. Dr Hamidullah discovered very early collections of hadiths preserved in libraries in Turkey, France and Germany, and on the basis of these, refuted the misgivings spread by orientalists. This work selects the collections of Hammam ibn Munabbih, a disciple of a companion of the Prophet to substantiate his arguments.

Chosen among Women: Mary and Fatima in Medieval Christianity and Shiite Islam combines historical analysis with the tools of gender studies and religious studies to compare the roles of the Virgin Mary in medieval Christianity with those of Fatima, daughter of the prophet Muhammad, in Shiite Islam. The book explores the proliferation of Marian imagery in Late Antiquity through the Church fathers and popular hagiography. It examines how Merovingian authors assimilated powerful queens and abbesses to a Marian prototype to articulate their political significance and, at the same time, censure holy women's public charisma. Mary Thurlkill focuses as well on the importance of Fatima in the evolution of Shiite identity throughout the Middle East. She examines how scholars such as Muhammad Baqir al-Majlisi advertised Fatima as a symbol of the Shiite holy family and its glorified status in paradise, while simultaneously binding her as a mother to the domestic sphere and patriarchal authority. This important comparative look at feminine ideals in both Shiite Islam and medieval Christianity is of relevance and value in the modern world. It will be welcomed by scholars and students of Islam, comparative religion, medieval Christianity, and gender studies. "Thurlkill has produced a remarkable study, a model for comparative work in the history of religions. The book is original, well-researched, and shows great erudition. Thurlkill's original acumen is brought to bear on a rich and variegated topic that has for too long been ignored by specialists not willing to move beyond the confines of overly determined areas of research." --Brannon Wheeler, United States Naval Academy
