The Red Mist A Tale of Civil Strife

There was no movement, no sign of life, anywhere visible— just that desolate,
deserted church, standing in rough outline amid the red mist of evening. I stood
silent, gazing in every direction, until assured that we were alone on the ridge.

IT WAS already growing dusk when the Staunton Battery of Horse Artillery returned wearily to camp after hours of hard field drill, the men ever conscious that no evolution, however trivial, was being overlooked by "Stonewall" Jackson, sitting astride his sorrel on a little eminence to the left, his stern face unrelieved by even the semblance of a smile. He would criticise without mercy, but never praise, and the artillerymen insensibly stiffened to the work, as eager to do well as though they were in action. The time was early spring, some remnants of snow still clinging to the hollows out of reach of the warming sun, and a chill wind blowing through the passes of the western mountains. The comparative idleness of the past winter months, given over to foraging and drill, together with the comforts of a permanent camp, had engendered forgetfulness of the hardships of the last campaign, and left the men eager to confront the dangers of the future. In no heart was there doubt of the final result—the Army of the Valley pinned its faith on "Old Jack." They were soldiers—veterans already—anxious for active service; their depleted ranks filled up once more with recruits, well drilled and efficient through constant training; and while many remembered with regret the old faces—the dead, the wounded, the missing—they nevertheless realized that never before were they in sterner mood or better prepared for grim fighting. The winter quarters of the Staunton Artillery were slightly off the main road, back within the shelter of a grove of oak trees, and I remained for some time overseeing the care of the horses before approaching the hut where the non-commissioned officers had mess. We were all of us still at the table, discussing the incidents of the drill, when a lieutenant appeared suddenly in the doorway, and glanced inquiringly about the room, scarcely able to distinguish our faces in the dull light of the lantern which alone illumined the interior.

The streets of south Auckland are a tough beat, and Dan Crowley's detective squad is under-resourced and overworked. Violent crime is riding a surging wave and the cops seem helpless to stop it. With a brutal gang of gun-wielding thugs robbing cash vans, each robbery more violent than the last, it is only a matter of time before they have a body on their hands. While Dan is chasing a promotion he's worked his butt off for, his compassion for the underdog leads him to hunt the hoods who have beaten a young boy and left him too traumatised to leave the house. Dan Crowley doesn't like bullies, and he's taking this case personally. A new boss named Kennedy doesn't help, and at a time when his career should have been taking off, Dan is racked with self-doubt and left reconsidering his future. Policing is his passion, but maybe it's become a one-sided affair with a cruel mistress. Between the internal politics, the crooks, and running a squad of oddball detectives, there's not much time to worry about priorities at home. At least he can always count on the lovely Molly, but she has problems of her own. Not only is their best friends' marriage in tatters, but something strange is going on at work and Molly is determined to get to the bottom of it. A little sleuthing on the side can't hurt...can it? Throw in an undercover cop, a blue-flamer, an old adversary and a vulnerable informer, and you have life as a street detective in south Auckland. It's hard, relentless and unforgiving, and Dan Crowley keeps coming back for more. But when the red mist comes down, lines are crossed and there are no guarantees he will walk away unscathed...

A psycho turns fairy-tale endings into nightmares in this “vivid cat-and-mice game” from the New York Times–bestselling author (William Bayer, Edgar Award–winning author). Karen is a lonely middle-aged doctor with a house in the woods. Sarah is a grief-stricken suburban widow who has turned to booze and barbiturates. Jordan is a directionless high school student and a child of divorce. They are three women with nothing in common but their red hair—until a stranger who calls himself the Big Bad Wolf sends each one the same chilling letter. Just like vulnerable Little Red Riding Hood, they are going to be stalked and killed—but in three distinct ways, in three different locations, all on the same fateful day. The one thing this devious madman didn’t count on was the Reds discovering each other. When authorities refuse to help, Karen, Sarah, and Jordan band together. But as they discover their power in numbers, how far are they’re willing to go to beat the Wolf at his own game. Until tragedy shattered his life and ripped away his future. Now God has drawn Reece out of the shadows to fulfill a prophecy spoken over him three decades ago. A prophecy about four warriors with the potential to change the world . . . if Reece will face his deepest regret and teach them what he has learned. They gather at a secluded and mysterious ranch deep in the mountains of Colorado, where they will learn to see the spiritual world around them with stunning clarity—and how to step into the supernatural. Their training is only the beginning. The four have a destiny to pursue a freedom even Reece doesn’t fully fathom.
