Jehannette, an illiterate peasant girl of seventeen, hears voices that tell her she must help the Dauphin become king. But this proves hard to accomplish in 15th century France as the British occupy parts of the country, including Rheims where the crowning must take place. Jehannette must first convince the Dauphin of her mission and then help lead his army to push back the occupiers. Will this tough, radical yet vulnerable girl be able to triumph without questioning her own sanity? Thomas Keneally’s interpretation of Joan of Arc contains a new vigor and authenticity not before seen in the Maid of Orleans stories. Capturing with incredible detail the realities of 15th century life, Blood Red, Sister Rose imaginatively portrays one of history’s most inspiring passages with immediacy and drama.

As one of the first attempts to portray Native Americans as they actually were and not the typically romanticized version that treated the Indian as alternately an unmitigated savage or a dashing bold hero fighting for his native land, this volume was critically acclaimed upon its debut in 1883. Fully illustrated with portraits on steel and featuring an introduction written by General William Tecumseh Sherman, this volume chronicles 33 years of experience amongst Native Americans of the West, including observations on their social life, religion, habits, traits, customs and exploits. This is an important record of American history.

Excerpt from A Red Sister, Vol. 1 of 3: A Story of Three Days and Three Months Here we must part, my friends, said the priest, resting his hand on the stile which divided the high road from a footway running across fields. This must be the 'short cut' of which the inn-keeper spoke. It will be easy enough for me, with only this light bag to carry, to make the rest of my journey on foot. Excerpt from A Red Sister, Vol. 3 of 3: A Story of Three Days and Three Months Seen thus in the full light of the wintry sunshine, the man assuredly was not good to look at. Lady Honor, in the brief glimpse which she had had of him, had seen only that he was lean and sinuous in figure; dark-skinned and dark-haired. If she could have had a full view of him now, as he faced the light, she would have further noted that he had sunken, restless eyes, set very close together, bushy eyebrows, a flat forehead, and face literally scored with oblique wrinkles.
