In the eyes of the divine rulers of Morocco he was something more than a criminal, because he was an emissary of El Mograb, the Pretender. There was a price upon the messenger's head, and his caution was, therefore, commendable.

Before the establishment of the Big Thicket Nature Preserve, the Big Thicket of Texas became a symbol of nature's last stand against encroaching civilization. Here, in a mingling of ecological zones, come together plants, animals, and birds—many of them rare—the flora and fauna of north and south, east and west. Northern maples and beeches stand not too great a distance from cypresses and Southern magnolias. American hollies grow large and orchids bloom among Northern ferns. Mesquite and tumbleweed, plants of the Western desert, survive where the annual rainfall averages sixty inches. On a major flyway, the Big Thicket is a stopping place for many birds in passage as well as home to a wide variety. Beavers build their dams there, and an occasional coyote yips in the night. Because of its great beauty and rich natural resources, use of the Big Thicket was the object of a forty-year struggle involving financiers, politicians, conservationists, and countless Thicket lovers. Each group viewed the Thicket from a different perspective and foresaw its future in different terms. This book records the impressions of two Thicket lovers. Michael Frary's paintings and drawings of woods and water, of birds in flight and strange plants growing close to the moist earth are pictures of a place, a time, a mood caught today—and not the same if left until tomorrow. The qualities of gentleness and violence are constant, but often hidden—there to be brought out by human need or human greed. William Owens writes of the people who have lived their lives in the Big Thicket, who have stirred its stillness with whoop and holler across the waters, who have taken in its stillness and explosive beauty until they themselves are made up of gentleness and violence. Together the impressions show what the Big Thicket was and is. What it will be—that is the chief concern of the book.

Isoke, a native African with white skin and golden hair, is a resilient teenager who encounters immense adversities which are essentially the corollaries of her skin condition. The abyss is dark, but she sees light in the form of an extraordinary power - the ability to rid people of their torment. Her life takes a whole new course when two gruesome murders leave village Mauho in a state of unmitigated dismay. With the help of her affable English teacher, Isoke decides to take matters into her own hands even though it comes at the cost of her own well-being. While she’s at it, her father undertakes a new occupation that gives his life a new, abominable turn - the consequences of which change Isoke’s life forever. This book tells the story of the men, machines and equipment developed for Australian agriculture. It traces developments ranging from broadacre cultivation to garden rotaries, to prickly pear destruction, to auto headers, to banana harvesting for paper making. Contemporary advertising sprinkled through the book provides a backdrop for the people, companies and products that have been important to our farming history. Did you know that tractor hands-free steering was first commercialised by Beeline in Moree, NSW? That the worlds biggest paddock cleaning machines are made in Banana? That single-pass grain and straw harvesting began in Western Australia? Dr Graeme Quick, is an internationally-recognised expert on farm equipment. He has worked on farm machinery engineering in over thirty countries and holds fourteen patents, two of which are incorporated into grain harvesters world-wide. This is the companion volume to "Australian Tractors, Indigenous Tractors and Self-propelled Machines in Rural Australia", the definitive reference on the 40-plus Australian manufacturers of tractors and self-propelled machines. He has published half a dozen other books. This one fits a unique place in documenting remarkable machines in the Australian economic and historical context.
