This is the first comprehensive introduction to the theory of word-representable graphs, a generalization of several classical classes of graphs, and a new topic in discrete mathematics. After extensive introductory chapters that explain the context and consolidate the state of the art in this field, including a chapter on hereditary classes of graphs, the authors suggest a variety of problems and directions for further research, and they discuss interrelations of words and graphs in the literature by means other than word-representability. The book is self-contained, and is suitable for both reference and learning, with many chapters containing exercises and solutions to seleced problems. It will be valuable for researchers and graduate and advanced undergraduate students in discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science, in particular those engaged with graph theory and combinatorics, and also for specialists in algebra.

The latest advances in Artificial Intelligence and (deep) Machine Learning in particular revealed a major drawback of modern intelligent systems, namely the inability to explain their decisions in a way that humans can easily understand. While eXplainable AI rapidly became an active area of research in response to this need for improved understandability and trustworthiness, the field of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR) has on the other hand a long-standing tradition in managing information in a symbolic, human-understandable form. This book provides the first comprehensive collection of research contributions on the role of knowledge graphs for eXplainable AI (KG4XAI), and the papers included here present academic and industrial research focused on the theory, methods and implementations of AI systems that use structured knowledge to generate reliable explanations. Introductory material on knowledge graphs is included for those readers with only a minimal background in the field, as well as specific chapters devoted to advanced methods, applications and case-studies that use knowledge graphs as a part of knowledge-based, explainable systems (KBX-systems). The final chapters explore current challenges and future research directions in the area of knowledge graphs for eXplainable AI. The book not only provides a scholarly, state-of-the-art overview of research in this subject area, but also fosters the hybrid combination of symbolic and subsymbolic AI methods, and will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Patterns help organize our lives. Students participating in the Patterns Differentiated Curriculum Kit will experience activities that will help organize their thought processes throughout life. Students will become pattern detectives, pattern creators, and pattern solvers in this three-part series. The books in Prufrock's new Differentiated Curriculum Kits employ a differentiated, integrated curriculum based on broad themes. This all-in-one curriculum helps teachers save planning time, ensure compliance with national standards, and most importantly, pique their students' natural excitement and interest in discovery. By participating in the wide variety of activities in the Differentiated Curriculum Kit for Grade 1, students will discover the patterns around them and gain a lifelong desire to learn. In Patterns Book 2: Body, Cycles, and Graphs, students will identify patterns in their environment. They will find patterns in their bodies, in cycles, and in graphs. Each book contains detailed lesson plans, reproducible activity sheets, and assessment tools

Way back in the second century BC, on the remote north-western frontier of China, a tribe of mounted archers overran the land of another. Though a commonplace event in those days, this incident initiated a nomad migration which threw the whole of Central Asia into turmoil and led to the fall of a remarkable Greek kingdom in distant northern Afghanistan. Dr. Torday has painstakingly pieced together the trail and identity of the warlike tribes involved, using the evidence of contemporary Chinese annals, Greek authors, scattered coins, a few surviving names and some legends which have been recorded. We learn who the Huns really were, why the wolf and the bird who fed Romulus and Remus were also known in Siberia, how the horn came to be a symbol of might all over contemporary Eurasia, why the earliest Sarmatian tribes called themselves "men of the river" and how an early Indo-European language came to be spoken at the edge of the Taklamakan desert. Mounted Archers is the first monograph to cover the history of this migration from China to the Hindu Kush, and from its antecedents to the time when the migrants came to rule all the land from the Aral Sea to the mouth of the Ganges. It is a work on a scale every bit as epic as the journey it recreates.

This monograph provides a theoretical treatment of the problems related to the embeddability of graphs. Among these problems are the planarity and planar embeddings of a graph, the Gaussian crossing problem, the isomorphisms of polyhedra, surface embeddability, problems concerning graphic and cographic matroids and the knot problem from topology to combinatorics are discussed. Rectilinear embeddability, and the net-embeddability of a graph, which appears from the VSLI circuit design and has been much improved by the author recently, is also illustrated. Furthermore, some optimization problems related to planar and rectilinear embeddings of graphs, including those of finding the shortest convex embedding with a boundary condition and the shortest triangulation for given points on the plane, the bend and the area minimizations of rectilinear embeddings, and several kinds of graph decompositions are specially described for conditions efficiently solvable. At the end of each chapter, the Notes Section sets out the progress of related problems, the background in theory and practice, and some historical remarks. Some open problems with suggestions for their solutions are mentioned for further research.

Workshop Physics Activity Guide is a student workbook designed to serve as the foundation for a two-semester calculus-based introductory physics course sequence that is activity-centered. It consists of 28 units that interweave text materials with activities that include prediction, qualitative observation, explanation, equation derivation, mathematical model building, quantitative experiments, and problem solving. Students use a powerful set of computer tools to record, display and analyze data as well as to develop mathematical models of physical phenomena. The design of many of the activities is based on the outcomes of physics education research. Workshop Physics Activity Guide is available in a format designed to give instructors flexibility in integrating all or some of the Workshop Physics units into their curriculum. The Core Volume (ISBN 0-471-15593-4) includes the introductory chapters and appendices that provide the foundation for all the other activity-based units. It includes the first seven activity units (Module1) comprising the first half of mechanics which covers experimental uncertainty, kinematics, and Newton' s Laws. The remaining activity units are available in three independent Modules. Each module is a collection of loose-leaf, three-hole punched sheets. Module 2 (ISBN 0-471-15594-2) covers additional topics in mechanics including momentum, energy, rotation, oscillations, and chaos. Module 3 (ISBN 0-471-15595-0) covers thermodynamics and nuclear radiation. Module 4 (ISBN 0-471-15596-9) covers electricity and magnetism. The Workshop Physics Activity Guide approach is supported by an Instructor' s Manual that (1) describes theunderlying history and philosophy of the Workshop Physics Project; (2) provides advice and suggestions on how to integrate the Guide into a variety of educational settings; (3) provides information on computer tools (hardware and software) as well as apparatus; and (4) includes suggested homework assignments for each unit. The Guide includes activities especially designed to be used with digital video capture tools and analysis software such as VideoPoint. Developed by the authors and available from PASCO Scientific, VideoPoint enhances the students' ability to observe and understand two-dimensional motion and other phenomena.
